Federal officials tested facial-recognition systems at the Progreso International Bridge in Texas to evaluate biometric verification for pedestrians leaving the United States, according to Dallas Express.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate conducted the operational assessment in May at the crossing between Progreso and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. Customs and Border Protection had asked the directorate in October 2025 to identify technology capable of confirming pedestrian departures securely and accurately.
Six companies first demonstrated systems at a federal test facility in Maryland. DHS and CBP then selected three solutions for the Texas field assessment: two offered by NEC National Security Systems and a joint system from Paravision and AiFi. The work was conducted under cooperative research and development agreements, with vendors covering their own participation costs while producing data for federal decision-making.
At Progreso, teams placed cameras at varying heights and used artificial intelligence to model the capture area, observe pedestrian movement and determine whether images were suitable for comparison through CBP’s Traveler Verification Service. The evaluation included travelers moving at different speeds and wearing hats, sunglasses or carrying umbrellas. Testing also occurred after dark with added lighting and different camera positions.
DHS officials told Dallas Express that image capture exceeded expectations in daytime and nighttime conditions. That is the agency’s assessment of the pilot, not an independently reported accuracy audit or a final decision to deploy a particular product.
Signs in English and Spanish informed pedestrians that U.S. citizens could decline biometric exit collection. DHS said the biometric entry-and-exit mandate applies to noncitizens. The article did not specify how many travelers participated, error rates, demographic performance differences, data-retention periods or the process for recording an opt-out.
The Texas trial has direct border-policy and constitutional significance because it tests government identification technology in a real public crossing. Biometric screening may improve departure records and reduce manual workloads, but it also creates privacy, accuracy and procurement questions. Before broader deployment, federal agencies should disclose performance results, retention and sharing rules, vendor access, oversight mechanisms and how officers honor the opt-out available to U.S. citizens.
